Nexus Hand-made Search Coils

All Nexus search coils are painstakingly made by hand using high quality materials, they're built to last and there's no worry whatsoever of the coil ears breaking. In all the years Nexus have produced both machines and coils no coil ears have ever broken. There's some really unique designs and shapes and each has a purpose. In this blog I will give a brief explanation of each coil that I personally own, what I feel they're best used for and how they perform. Problems can occur if you're not using the correct coil for the conditions that you find yourself in. For example, on land with a high level of iron contamination you're not going to want to be swinging a 20' inch low frequency coil. Doing this will result in far too many targets being under the coil at the same time, this could create a situation where potential good targets are getting masked. When targets are close together the larger the coil the harder it is to isolate individual signals. The ideal coils for these environments would be the 24 KHZ high frequency silver scouts due to their super fast recovery speed and fantastic ability to unmask and isolate targets within iron. The same can be said for land that's reasonably quiet, using a 20' inch coil could make sense because you'll be covering more ground and it certainly punches deeper. Quiet ground allows you to really hear those slight variations within the threshold that could be an indication of deep treasure. Remember, Nexus machines, 'even more so with the new V3' are designed to scan the deepest layers of the soil, it takes an intense amount of hours to master both the language and operation.

20' Inch DD Low Frequency

13' Inch 6kHz DD Search Coil - For V2 & V3

The perfect coil, and the one I use the most is the 13' inch 6 kHz DD, this is a perfect allrounder, it punches really deep on all sized objects and isolates targets very well on land where signals are relatively close together. Do not underestimate this coil, coins have been dug at a recorded depth of 48cm in the right conditions. As with all Nexus machines, for the best results it's advised to swing slowly to give the coil & machine the chance to latch onto those potential deep signals. Regarding weight, you can swing this coil comfortably without the use of a swing harness. After being dialled in to the ground it runs super smooth and stable, it's easy to tune. I have found tiny pieces of non-ferrous metals with this coil, even though it's low frequency, you won't miss anything, large or small, you've just got to listen closely to the threshold.

10' Inch 7kHz DD Search Coil - For V2 & V3

The 10' inch 7kHz DD coil is a fantastic coil to swing, it's super lightweight and balances the machine out beautifully. Once again, don't underestimate the depth of this coil, it punches deeper than any other 10' inch coil on the market, 'I can say that confidently'. I've found coins in excess of 12' inches using this specific coil, target indication was unmistakable. It's very easy to dial in, due to the size, when using my MP V2 I might push the sensitivity up a fraction. It's very sensitive to small objects at depth such as buttons and small coins. It can be used on ground where targets are close together, its ability to isolate signals is very effective. Remember, low frequency coils are for general use, they're not designed to unmask. For general search and depth you just can't get any better.

10' Inch 18kHz DD Search Coil - For V2 & V3

This is a very interesting coil and will be readily available when the MP V3 is officially released, what we have here is a 10' inch DD coil that has the ability to unmask nonferrous targets relatively close to iron - NOTE: Not Silver Coins. Due to it's 18kHz frequency you might just be getting the best all round coil which will cover every situation. it provides outstanding depth with a high level of unmasking capabilities. You'll find that it's super sensitive to both large and tiny targets. I've hit on very small piece of lead 'measured' 10 inches down "picture below", something that genuinely surprised me. However this target produced a slight rise in the threshold and RGB meter that could've easily been missed if you didn't know what to listen for. Obviously the lead item itself isn't exactly special but the fact it was detected that far down, there was nothing stopping it from being an interesting treasure. I would describe this coil as 'sparky', it can be a little tricky to dial in, you'll find there's no middle ground, the ground balance settings are either side of the scale. However once the GB procedure has been done correctly, it stays lovely and stable and the sensitivity is nothing but outstanding.

20' Inch 5.7kHz DD Search Coil - For V2 & V3

This coil is a monster but due to its weight it really doesn't feel to bad when you're swinging it for the day, however I do use a swing harness with this one. As mentioned before in other blogs, coil height and swing consistency have to be correct for Nexus machines to run at optimum levels. I use this coil on farmland once it has been ploughed and flattened, 'one point to consider when doing this, due to how sensitive the coil is it will be sparky on freshly ploughed soil' and might require 'mineral control' to be activated to be able to ground balance properly. I will take it on pasture but not on fields that have loads of shallow trash targets. It has a lovely wide scan that covers a lot of ground per swing, it locks onto targets beautifully and, despite what some people seem to think, picks up on the smallest of targets. In fact I've found my smallest clothes button to date using the 20' inch DD coil. If I've been working a section of land for a while, clearing all the shallow non-ferrous trash that could be masking deeper targets, when I feel I've opened the ground up, I will then take the 20' inch coil and start to slow down the pace listening for potential deeper targets. Depending on conditions the 20' inch DD coil hits very well on coins at extreme depths '14' inches +' and the signal is surprisingly clear, if the deeper items are there to be had and you understand the machine you will hit on them with this coil. Despite its size it's very easy to dial in, due to the size you might find yourself having to run the threshold  'a touch' lower than you have it set with the smaller coils.

Below is a video using the MP V2 demonstrating some depth tests with a few of the coils I've mentioned, including the 20' DD when it was in its prototype stage. Please understand that the performance of the finished 20'DD beats the prototype in every way and the new MP V3 outperforms the MP V2 in all areas as well.

Dual 20' Inch 5.2kHz DD Search Coil - For V2 & V3

This is a beast of a coil but the saving grace is it's built from carbon fibre so it's as light as it can possibly be. I recommend using a swing harness because it will start to feel heavy after a few hours of swinging. This coil is great for larger objects but don't underestimate it, it's still surprisingly sensitive to small targets. If you're looking for hoards, large deep relics, axe heads etc then this is the coil to use, it punches really deep. This coil on the V2 can hit a copper bucket easily at 175cm in undisturbed ground, using it on the V3 will improve the overall depth considerably. For it to operate correctly you have to ground balance and swing the coil at least 15cm off the ground, this helps to eliminate ground noise. The threshold tone is best on a lower setting which you will have to experiment with. In my mind if there's a really deep hoard out there then this coil will find it, when operating it at the correct height it's easy to dial in and with modified threshold settings you can run it as quiet and stable as all the other coils. This is obviously a 'niche' product, you're not going to take it into a park or a field littered with shallow items. I use this coil once I'm confident I've cleared an area out including large amounts of iron. This way I know that I don't have anything masking potential deep targets, but lets remember you can only find what's there. Just because it's super deep it doesn't mean it's going to magic items out the ground that aren't actually there in the first place. Pinpointing takes a little getting use to, the detection range is the central part of the coil - 'the tear drop shape'. Using VCO tones on the V3 makes pinpointing a hell of a lot easier.

9' Inch @ 11.5' Inch 24kHz Silver Scout Search Coils - For V2 & V3

Both the 24kHz silver scout coils are a work of art, they're light, sleek  and made from an immaculate carbon fibre weave that is hardwearing. Both these coils are designed for use in iron contaminated environments, their ability to unmask and isolate targets is unrivalled and will continue to be for years to come. Both are super light and their operation is incredibly smooth and stable, they're both super sensitive to the smallest of targets and have the ability to see nonferrous items that are literally covered by iron. Please take note that there is a limit to the size of the iron you can discriminate out before unmasking is not possible. For example, you can't place a large solid piece of iron over a coin and expect the coil to detect it. You have to be realistic, however you can cover a coin in small to medium sized iron shards with tiny gaps and the coin will be picked up.  These coils are designed for thorough analysis of the land, if there's tiny relics or small pieces of jewellery both silver scouts will find them and hit really hard. There have been countless times when I've dug a coin and iron has been in the same hole or iron was in the top of the plug. If you want to find hammered silver coins on iron contaminated ground then look no further. They are super easy to dial in and even though they're high frequency still punch deep, I've found a thimble at 14' inches "measured" with the 9' inch silver scout which was an 'eye-opener'. Using the VCO tones on the MP V3, if you've got relatively quiet ground and you want to swing faster, the silver scout will lock on to non-ferrous targets a lightning speed.

That covers the coils that I personally own that can be used on both the V2 & V3, there are a few more in the Nexus line up but in all honesty I don't need them for my style of hunting. I'm never going to require a dual 30' inch coil and I don't posses a digger which would be needed to extract anything I find with it. I have a fantastic range of coils for my Credo DDM including a dual 9' inch, however due to the Credo being discontinued I don't really see any point in writing about them. In the not too distant future there will be a whole new range of dual coils coming out for the V3 that will also be compatible with the V2, these will range from 8' inches upwards. I am currently waiting on a custom built dual 15' inch which I will review when I receive it. So to conclude, the pricing of the coils might seem expensive to some out there but you're getting a precision instrument built by hand using the best material for the job and combined with either the V2 or V3, they will get the job done.
